Antimicrobial Stewardship in Wound Management

Joint Symposium of BSAC and EWMA

The WHO has identified the key factors contributing to general misuse of antimicrobials to be; diagnostic uncertainty, lack of skills, failure to properly utilise clinical guidelines and failure insufficient implementation of basic policies to promote rational use.

Introducing Antimicrobial Stewardship in Wound Management
BSAC and EWMA have embarked on a mission to develop and introduce the concept of antimicrobial stewardship in wound management. During the past year experts from BSAC and EWMA have co-written and position paper on the topic. The paper is currently in peer-review, but highlights and findings from the project will be presented in the second part of the symposium.
To set the scene, the first part of the
symposium will focus on the concept of antimicrobial stewardship and examine the topic from various perspectives.
Finally infection prevention and the nurse’s role in hands-on antimicrobial stewardship programmes will be discussed.

Symposium objectives

·         Enlighten on the innovation and best practice in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of wound infection.

·         Educate about the challenges of antimicrobial resistance in wound care.

·         Inspire and prepare the audience to work with and implement antimicrobial stewardship programmes
